Description:
On an inspection trip to the Yukon River Bridge during construction, ca. 1974. From left to right: Nate Bauer, Trans-Alaska Pipeline (later called Alyeska Pipeline Service Company) on loan from Humble Oil Company; Bruce Campbell, State of Alaska Commissioner of Highways; and Clyde Hovik, Construction Manager, Manson-Osberg Construction Company, Seattle, the contracting firm for the bridge construction. An earlier plan proposed by Alyeska was to build an underwater pipeline with a ferry in the summer and an ice bridge in the winter for vehicles. The state pushed for construction of a year-round, permanent bridge.
