Rossman Peetok

Rossman Peetok is an Iñupiaq elder from Wainwright, Alaska. He was born in Wainwright in 1932 and was raised living a traditional hunting and fishing lifestyle. He was twelve years old when he first went out fishing on the frozen lagoon near the village, and was fourteen when he went out onto the sea ice to help with whaling. Rossman stared in the 1969 Walt Disney movie "Track of the Giant Snow Bear," that was filmed near Barrow. For many years, Rossman has generously shared his knowledge and observations of change with those interested in learning.

Rossman Peetok	Rossman Peetok was interviewed on June 2, 2017 by Karen Brewster at the Tuzzy Consortium Library in Utqiaġvik, Alaska (formerly known as Barrow). Rossman lives in Wainwright, but was in Utqiaġvik attending the 2017 North Slope Elders/Youth Conference and was able to take time away from sessions to participate in this interview. In this interview, Rossman talks about how 1969/1970 was the year he first started noticing environmental changes associated with climate change and global warming. He also talks about being out on the sea ice, the effect of wind and current and how there are seasonal variations, and changes in ice conditions, such as a lack of thick, heavy ice.	2013-25-41	Sea Ice in Northern Alaska	Jun 2, 2017
