George "Ayak’aq" Peter

George Peter

George Ayak’aq Peter is Yup'ik and was born on December 3, 1956 to Elizabeth (Lomack) Peter and Edward Peter in Bethel, Alaska. George grew up in Akiachak, Alaska where he attended elementary school at the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) school, and then went to high school at Mt. Edgecumbe School in Sitka, Alaska. He later completed two years of college courses at the Kuskokwim Campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (KUC) in Bethel. George served as the Tribal Administrator for the IRA Council in Akiachak from 1993 to 1998, and was re-hired as Tribal Administrator again in 2002, continuing in that role as of 2006. He likes to help people and wants to provide the community with more services. One of his goals is to promote self-determination and self-sufficiency. His message to youth is to get a higher education because it is an important tool that will mold your future. George has also served as a director for the Akiachak Mushers Association, and been manager of Akiachak Fish Producers.
