Return to Specific Plants Discussed in Oral History Interviews page

Arnica is a flowering plant in the daisy family (Asteraceae). There are many types of arnicas (Arnica spp.) in Alaska that vary based on the region they grow, ranging from meadows to alpine regions. They all produce rich yellow blooms. Arnica is available in health food stores to treat muscle pain, but also the flowers and other plant parts are used in traditional medicines.

Listen to Karen Brooks talk about how she uses arnica. Or read the transcript (ORAL HISTORY 2021-02-31, PART 1). To learn more about how Karen Brooks uses plants for traditional medicine and healing, listen to her full interview.
