NARRATOR: And Jessie Haver Butler, now 87 who in 1917 was working in Washington, D.C. for the Consumer's League.
JESSIE HAVER BUTLER: I became dedicated in a way, to the woman's world and the woman's needs. And, of course, that dedication was really backed by the tragedy of my own family life, and my mother's death at ten, and how I had lived in that valley where no woman in any family that gave birth to the children lived to bring them up. And I didn't think it was justice for women to suffer like that. Now I'm finding women suffering in industry. So all down the line, it seemed to me, it was a bad world for women.
