Description:
Rawhide was used before ropes were introduced in the 1800's. The shown rawhide was made from caribou skin to be used in snowshoes. Caribou skin was used instead of moose skin because it is thinner. The skin is cut into strips when it's wet and hung out in the cold to dry. If hung in warm weather, the strips will become hard and stretch. The rawhide shown above was made by Wassillie and Mary V. Trefon.
