Walter Newman, Sr.

Walter Newman, Sr.

Walter Newman, Sr. was Iñupiaq and was born in 1934 to Hilda Alashuk and Turak Newman, Sr. in Beaver, Alaska. He grew up living a traditional subistence lifestyle based upon hunting, fishing and trapping. As an adult, he worked a variety of jobs, including helping to build the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline, working in mining camps, and working at Tanana Chiefs Conference in Fairbanks. Having used dogteams for travel, Walter had a great love for dogmushing and volunteered for the Iditarod and Yukon Quest dog races and handled dogs for a number of mushers. Walter was also known for his musical talent as a gifted guitar player, and his love of dancing traditional jigs and waltzes. Walter passed away in 2010.
