David Atkinson

David Atkinson

David Atkinson was a research scientist and professor at the International Arctic Research Center (IARC) and Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks from 2004 to 2010. Since 2010, he has been a professor and department chair in the Department of Geography at the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. He earned a PhD in 2000 from the University of Ottawa that was focused on high-arctic climate issues and surface air temperature modeling. As a geographer, David's interests have centered around understanding how weather affects human and natural systems, the effectiveness of climate modeling, and the impacts of climate change in Alaskan coastal communities and the Arctic. He uses a variety of techniques in his research, including computer model analysis, human interviews, and field instrument deployments.

David Atkinson gave a presentation on February 15, 2010 to the Stakeholders and Climate Change Meeting at Pike's Waterfront Lodge in Fairbanks, Alaska. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together local experts and scientists to discuss issues related to climate change. Scientists gave presentations addressing some of the issues raised in the communities about impacts to their subsistence livelihoods. In this presentation, titled "Climate Patterns in the Interior," David discusses climate change in general and more local weather patterns and modes of circulation that influence Interior Alaska. David Atkinson gave a presentation on February 16, 2010 to the Stakeholders and Climate Change Meeting at the International Arctic Research Center (IARC) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in Fairbanks, Alaska. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together local experts and scientists to discuss issues related to climate change. Scientists gave presentations addressing some of the issues raised in the communities about impacts to their subsistence livelihoods. In this presentation, titled "Context-Specific Weather and Climate Indicators: Helping to Quantify Observations From the Land," David discusses local applications of climate information and the importance of local observations to the study of climate change.
