Jeff Brady

Originally from North Carolina, Jeff Brady came to Skagway, Alaska in the mid-1970s. He first worked for a hiking and rafting business, but eventually started the Skagway News newspaper, which he edited for 37 years. He also started the Skagway News Depot and Books bookstore. In 1996, he met his wife, Dorothy, who grew up in Skagway, and in 2011 they purchased the old Hanousek Homestead in Dyea. They have restored the cabins and other buildings on the property and now use it as the base for a writers and artists in residence program, as well as their summer retreat home. Jeff also is one of the co-founders and organizers of the North Words Writers Symposium held in Skagway every spring, as well as one of the organizers behind the Buckwheat Ski Classic cross-country ski race and the Yukon River Quest canoe race.

Jeff and Dorothy Brady, Part 1	Jeff and Dorothy Brady were interviewed on October 9, 2018 by Karen Brewster at their home in Skagway, Alaska. In this first part of a two part interview, Jeff and Dorothy talk about their lives in Skagway and environmental changes they have observed over time in Skagway and Dyea. As an avid gardener, Dorothy talks about changes she has seen in the plants in her garden and the shifts in her gardening techniques and the effects of seasonal weather changes. Jeff and Dorothy Brady, Part 2	This is the continuation of an interview with Jeff and Dorothy Brady on October 10, 2018 by Karen Brewster at their home in Skagway, Alaska. In this second part of a two part interview, the Bradys continue to talk about observations of environmental change in the Skagway and Dyea area. They discuss pollution and water contamination, changes in fish and bird populations, and the occurance of rock slides into the harbor.
