Bob Gerhard

Bob Gerhard was a long-time National Park Service (NPS) employee who came to work at Denali National Park and Preserve in 1976 and was instrumental in the development of a climbing management system and establishment of the climbing ranger program. His understanding of the history of NPS backcountry policy and management is exceptional, and he has been one of the Park Service "insiders" not afraid to take on difficult and sometimes unpopular positions in the interests of protecting the Park experience on Denali. As a ranger at Denali, Bob was on many search and rescue operations, long before the days of a contracted rescue helicopter, and support staff at high camp. After working at Denali, Bob became a Subsistence Manager at the Alaska Regional Office of the NPS in Anchorage, once again tackling a particularly challenging management issue.
