Marilyn Leland

Marilyn Leland

At the time of the 1989 Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, Marilyn Leland was the Executive Director of Cordova District Fishermen United in Cordova, Alaska, and helped lead the fishermen’s response to the oil spill throughout Prince William Sound. Leland was one of the founders of the Prince William Sound Regional Citizens' Advisory Council (PWSRCAC). PWSRCAC is an independent non-profit citizens oversight group promoting the environmentally safe operation of the Alyeska Marine Terminal in Valdez, Alaska and the oil tankers that use the terminal. Marilyn Leland became an employee of the PWSRCAC in 1992 and was loaned to the U.S. Coast Guard in Washington, DC to assist in writing the regulations to implement the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90). Leland served as PWSRCAC’s Deputy Director from 1994-2006, while also being a member of the advisory boards for the National Invasive Species Advisory Committee and the Prince William Sound Oil Spill Recovery Institute.
